A Lift to Life

Aldrovandi-front-coverLouis Aldrovandi came to Canada with $200 in his pocket and a solid education as a mechanic from the best technical schools in the industrial heartland of northern Italy. He worked on a farm, as many immigrants did after the war, then for a trucking company working on the construction of the Toronto subway.

He knew to make money he would have to do something different, so he worked on a number of remote construction projects in northern Quebec. He didn’t drink and didn’t gamble, the weakness of workers in the north, and soon had enough money to return to Italy and marry Gianna. More hard work and he was soon running construction projects in Colombia and western Canada. Flash forward and he bought a tractor dealership and then founded a company making rough terrain forklifts, LiftKing.

Louis Aldrovandi heard of me through a mutual acquaintance and asked me to write his life story. He had already written quite a bit, but it was in Italian, translated into English and was a bit disjointed. After looking it over I agreed to take it on. About a year later we brought out A Lift to Life. We published it privately. Since then we have done a second edition and Louis wants to include some new aspects of his real estate career, “Where I made my real money”.

There are some problems writing for someone whose first language isn’t English, but we worked them out. The key thing is that Louis had a fascinating life, from being on the run from the German Army as a teenage partisan, to making such as huge success of himself in Canada. He was, and is, great raw material.
